Governor Mark Dayton continues trying to force Republicans back to the bargaining table to repeal a provision in the new state budget that prohibits illegal immigrants from obtaining drivers licenses.
House Republican Majority Leader Joyce Peppin takes issue saying, “I was in the room when we had the discussion about the drivers licenses myself. He agreed to that. I heard him with my own two ears, and for the governor now to somehow deny that he’d made that agreement.”
Dayton opposed the measure, but said he had to sign the bill to avoid July 1st shutdown of key public safety functions. Dayton vetoed funding for the legislature, trying to force Republicans to re-open negotiations on the drivers license measure, but they say Dayton violated the Constitution and will likely sue him.
