Governor Mark Dayton came out of a private meeting with Republican and Democratic leaders this afternoon, saying he’ll work over the weekend and have a proposal Monday to try to break the deadlock at the legislature over transportation funding. Senate Democratic Majority Leader Tom Bakk (BOCK) says the governor “indicated that neither one of the leaders probably would like it, that it would likely have something that neither one of us wanted to do or that made us uncomfortable, and he indicated that that’s really the art of compromise.” Democrats say to address Minnesota’s long-term transportation needs a gas tax increase is needed. Republicans say no. They want to use bonding and General Fund money for roads and bridges, which Democrats warn would starve other programs and projects.
