Governor Tim Walz could get more support from Republicans than from fellow Democrats, if he decides to push for individual income tax cuts. The governor said last week, “A lot of middle class families need to see some relief somehow.” Republicans, who control the state Senate, appear open to Walz’s idea. Tax Committee Chairman, Lino Lakes Senator Roger Chamberlain responded, “If the governor is talking about real tax reductions,…. we’re on board — but we’re not on board with tax increases.”
But House Democratic Majority Leader Ryan Winkler says with a long-term budget forecast that looks “pretty grim”, plus needs in education, health care and senior care, “Those things cost real money, and it will be difficult to accommodate those needs without some kind of revenue increase.”
