Dems, communities of color urge Repubs to address racial economic disparities in MN

April 26, 2016 By Bill Werner

Members of Minnesota’s communities of color joined D-F-L lawmakers at the State Capitol today, urging House Republicans to address racial economic disparities in Minnesota before the legislature adjourns in under four weeks. Vaughn Larry from Saint Paul tells Republicans, “Think about this: Y’all celebrated Prince… a product of Minneapolis Public Schools, before y’all took arts and stuff outta school, before you started doing those tests and assessments on those students.”  Larry says lawmakers celebrate Prince, but make the ground ripe for sending people to prison because kids aren’t learning what they need to know.  Princeton Representative Sondra Erickson responds Republicans want to reduce disparities by alleviating the teacher shortage, which “will result in children in every region of the state reaching their full potential.”
