Republicans say Democrats at the legislature are stalling on electing four new regents for the University of Minnesota. House Democrats respond it’s because Senate Republicans won’t approve the full amount for election security measures. House Speaker Melissa Hortman says, “I know they’re looking for action from us on a few things. We’re looking for action from them on a few things.” Senate Republican Majority Leader Paul Gazelka says full funding for election security needs more discussion — and as for the U-of-M regents election, “We’re at least having conversations about getting it done without kicking it to the governor, which I think is really a cop-out.”
Observers say House Democrats are divided over U-of-M Board of Regents candidates and worried Republicans could elect *their* candidates if the legislature takes a vote now.
