It appears Democrats will keep their majority — albeit more slim — in the Minnesota House. But control of the state Senate is a bit more in question with some races still in flux. If Republicans retain control of the Minnesota Senate, expect a continued standoff over Governor Tim Walz’s COVID emergency powers, with the Senate trying to cancel them but the House likely backing the governor. Whether Republicans would try other pressure tactics, such as removing more Walz cabinet members, remains to be seen. If Democrats took control of the Minnesota Senate, it would affect how the legislature addresses Minnesota’s expected multi-billion-dollar budget deficit. Tax increases in some areas could be possible if Democrats control both chambers of the legislature — but if Republicans retain a majority in the Senate, such a move would be met with strong resistance.
