Despite Trump acquittal, House Democrats say they’ll still subpoena John Bolton

February 6, 2020 By Bill Werner

The Republican-controlled Senate has acquitted President Trump in his impeachment trial, but Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told his fellow senators, “Speaker of the House [Nancy Pelosi] says she refuses to accept this acquittal, whatever that means. Perhaps she will tear up the verdict like she tore up the State of the Union address.”

House Democrats are talking about issuing a subpoena compelling former national security advisor John Bolton to testify, something Minnesota Democratic Senator Tina Smith supports. “The question is, are we gonna read it after we buy a book on Amazon, or are we gonna find out about it when he testifies under oath,” Smith says.

Carleton College analyst Steven Schier says it’s possible Bolton would try to honor the subpoena, but the sticking-point is “the likelihood that the administration would invoke executive privilege, and then that would be resolved in the federal court.”
