The Democratic rivals for governor in the August 14th primary are taking political shots at each other over gun control. DFL-endorsed candidate Erin Murphy pledges to push for universal background checks and an assault weapons ban, while pointing to a 2010 quote from rival Tim Walz who said “I’m 100 percent with the NRA.” Walz, who also supports background checks and an assault weapons ban, responded he’s “gone from an A-rating from the NRA to recognition as a Gun Sense Candidate of Distinction from Moms Demand Action.”
Meanwhile Murphy said her other DFL rival, Lori Swanson, was endorsed in 2014 by the Minnesota Gun Owners PAC. Swanson’s campaign responds she supports enhanced background checks and wants to ban bump stocks — and points out that while Murphy was majority leader, no major gun bills were voted on in the Minnesota House.
