The D-N-R says the public shouldn’t be unduly alarmed after a girl sustained serious injuries from apparently being bitten by a fish on Island Lake north of Duluth. The agency says cases of fish biting people are so rare they’re not even tracked. The eleven-year-old was on a paddleboard, said she felt her foot in the fish’s mouth, kicked it with the other foot and it released. She needed surgery to repair nine deep cuts, some down to the bone, plus tendon damage. In 2012 a triathlete was severely bitten by an otter on the same lake, but officials believe this latest attack was by a fish.
