Environmentalists are blasting the Trump administration after a study on copper-nickel mining near the BWCA was dropped from a federal spending bill, just before Twin Metals is expected to formally submit its plan for a mine near Ely. Former D-N-R Commissioner Tom Landwehr, now with the group Save the Boundary Waters says, “Trump administration has corrupted the environmental [review] process to force this project on Minnesota for political reasons, overlooking the science, and Minnesota’s elected leaders are now the people who have to decide what to do.”
Landwehr is asking the Walz administration to deny key permits for Twin Metals because the Trump administration is withholding information that likely shows the project will endanger the B-W-C-A. But 8th District Congressman Pete Stauber says opponents of Twin Metals are completely disregarding the livelihoods of his constituents and the needs of the nation.
