Ex-FBI agent challenging Stearns County sheriff’s comments on Jacob Wetterling investigation

October 2, 2018 By Bill Werner

Former F-B-I Agent Steve Gilkerson this morning (11am) responds to what he calls Stearns County Sheriff Don Gudmundson’s “speculative conclusions” about the Jacob Wetterling investigation. Gudmundson said investigators didn’t update each other, psychics were used before a neighborhood canvass, and similar local cases weren’t given close enough attention.  “How many other boys were assaulted in Stearns County? Well, there were seven — and they were in Paynesville where Danny Heinrich lived and… ultimately where Jacob Wetterling was assaulted and murdered,” Gudmundson said on September 20th, the day the investigation documents were made public.

When former FBI Investigator Al Garber objected to Gudmundson’s statements, Gudmundson told him to take it outside.  Garber said afterwards, “When he [Gudmundson] began the presentation saying it [the investigation] went off the rails, that was a clue to me: …He has his beliefs,… and he was gonna make it fit the facts in this case.”
