Fallen Minnesota officer honored in D.C.

The name of fallen Wayzata police Officer Bill Mathews is now on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D-C. Thousands of officers attended the 30th annual Candlelight Vigil on the National Mall Sunday night to honor 360 officers from the across the U-S who died in the line of duty. Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek read the name of Officer Mathews during the vigil. Stanek said “we will never be able to repay Officer Mathews for his sacrifice, but as a community we can make sure he is honored and remembered for the great work he did every day.” Mathews was struck and killed by a car September 8th, 2017 while clearing debris from Highway 12 in Wayzata. That stretch of roadway is now known as the Officer Bill Mathews Memorial Highway.
