A bill for a family medical leave program paid for by Minnesota employees and employers continued moving forward this week in the state Senate. Stephanie Darrow with Gandi Mahal Restaurant in Minneapolis supports it, saying “it will provide small businesses with the opportunity to support their employees in a vital and necessary way.” But Cam Winton with the Minnesota Chamber says three-quarters of employee leaves are already compensated, in some cases through vacation or personal time off — and he says in other cases, the owner “just makes it work.” A family medical leave program faces tough opposition in the Republican-controlled Minnesota House.
