Health insurance costs and health care access are the top issue in Greater Minnesota, says the Minnesota Farmers Union after 14 listening sessions across the state. The report says there’s support for making public programs including MinnesotaCare more widely available, but Farmers Union President Gary Wertish says that issue has been politicized. Wertish says, “It’s more about getting re-elected than it is [about] fixing the problem. And I think whether that’s the right answer or not, we don’t know, but it needs to be out front and seriously discussed — not just dismiss it because it’s a government-run health care.” Wertish notes there’s already government-run health care in Medicare and the V-A. Opponents say those are two good examples why there shouldn’t be more.
