(St. Cloud, MN) — A federal report blames St. Cloud Hospital for “deficient practices,” saying a man who shot and killed an Aitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy at the hospital last month had not been evaluated by a psychiatrist. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services say Danny Hammond was assessed by a psychiatric physician’s assistant–not a physician–and that person placed Hammond on a 72-hour hold. Hammond was taken to the hospital after allegedly attacking his wife and had made multiple comments about killing himself and any male who came into his room at the hospital. Officials at St. Cloud Hospital say they’ve been asked to not comment on specifics, but that Hammond “was evaluated by a credentialed member of our psychiatric team.”
