State officials say the security fence that’s ringed the Minnesota Capitol building since riots in early June will be removed “in the very near future.” Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan says she’s eager for it. “When you have a fence around a building that is the house of the people, intentional or not it sends a message to folks about their ability to participate.”
But even though the fence is coming down, officials say they don’t yet have a date for reopening the Capitol building to the public — with proper COVID safety protocols of course. Flanagan says, “Those are certainly decisions that we’ll make in partnership with the Department of Health, and we’ll let folks know just as soon as possible when the doors themselves will once again be open.”
