A ceremonial ground-breaking and the first ice blocks were laid today in Rice Park for the Saint Paul Winter Carnival’s Ice Palace — the first in 14 years to coincide with Super Bowl 52. The ice palace, roughly 70 feet tall with seven spires, will have four thousand ice blocks, each weighing 500 pounds. “Buy a Block” allows the public to help fund construction and prices start at 25 dollars. The Saint Paul Winter Carnival opens January 25th with an extended run through February 10th to include the Super Bowl.
