The Minnesota Department of Health is reporting the first flu-related death of a child this season. The department reported 10 pediatric flu-related deaths last year. In an update Thursday, health officials categorized the flu as widespread across the state. Over the last reporting week there were 112 people hospitalized with flu-related symptoms. The average age of the patient was 53. Influenza activity is also ramping up at Minnesota schools. Officials say there were 42 outbreaks across the state’s school’s — compared to 20 the week before. And there were five outbreaks in the state’s nursing homes.
