Flash flooding closes roads in SW Minnesota, state of emergency in Lyon County

July 3, 2018 By Bill Werner

Flash flooding from heavy rains overnight in southwest Minnesota has prompted Lyon County to declare a state of emergency and MN-DOT is advising no travel in Murray County. Dan Paluch at K-M-H-L Radio in Marshall says some roads are washed out, with water over the pavement in places, parking lots are under water, and around Redwood Falls there was a close call for a young man.  Paluch says the man “worked on a farm, was driving to work, and he did hit one of those ravines that he couldn’t see that was under water, but… he was able to escape his car.”

There are numerous reports of flooded basements, and in Tracy a foundation wall collapsed.

The Red Cross has opened an evacuation shelter at the 4-H Building on the Murray County Fairgrounds in Slayton.
