Friday morning briefs

August 25, 2017 By Tasha Redel

A former east metro principal will serve five years’ probation plus community service for stealing district funds. Reports say 42-year old Aaron Harper of Cottage Grove will also pay 75-hundred dollars in restitution after pleading guilty to a theft by swindle charge back in May. Harper resigned as principal of East Ridge High School in Woodbury in 2014.

The search continues around Alexandria for 15-year old Jasmine Block. The girl has been missing for more than two weeks. A two-thousand dollar reward has been offered for information leading to her safe return.

A 12-year sentence for an 18-year-old who raped a fellow student in a locker room at Shakopee High School last fall. The Star Tribune reports Angel Torres Junior will serve about seven years in prison with the balance on supervised release. The 17-year-old victim told authorities she considered Torres a friend and accepted his invitation to leave class to go to the water fountain. Prosecutors say once there, he grabbed the girl by the wrist, took her into a handicapped stall in the locker room and sexually assaulted her.

It’s day two of the great Minnesota Get Together. This is the Governor’s Fire Prevention Day. Stevie Nicks and Vanessa Carlton perform tonight at the State Fair Grandstand.

Windy conditions have returned to the North Shore where the National Weather Service is once again warning against swimming around Duluth. Forecasters say high waves will cause dangerous rip currents in Lake Superior all day.

Add to the list of construction slowdowns…a stretch of I-35 in Duluth will see lane closures starting next week. MN-DOT says tunnel maintenance and work on the Blatnik Bridge begin on Monday during the morning and early afternoon hours.
