Attorneys for George Floyd’s family today filed a federal civil lawsuit against the city of Minneapolis and the police officers involved in his death. Floyd died May 25th after officer Derek Chauvin, pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck as Floyd said he couldn’t breathe. Announcing the suit today, Floyd family attorney Ben Crump said “it was not just the knee of officer Derek Chauvin on George Floyd’s neck for 8:46, but it was the knee of the entire MPD on the neck of George Floyd that killed him.” Crump added that “the city of Minneapolis has a history of policies and procedures and deliberate indifference when it comes to the treatment of arrestees, especially black men.” The complaint states that Floyd was deprived, under color of state law, of his clearly established rights as secured by the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution. The complaint is seeking compensatory and special damages and costs as defined under federal law in an amount to be determined by a jury. The complaint also asks for the appointment of a receiver or similar authority to ensure that the City of Minneapolis properly trains and supervises its police officers, and for any other additional relief that the Court believes is just and equitable.
