A two-year tuition freeze at the U-of-M and state universities, and a one-percent tuition cut at state colleges next academic year, are among measures being tossed around in the Republican-controlled Minnesota Senate. Frankie Becerra with LEAD MN supports it. “Too many of our community and technical college students are struggling to afford what is supposed to be the entry point for higher education and what should be a pathway to the middle class,” Becerra says.
But Democratic Senator Jason Isaacson from Shoreview says”The problem with a tuition freeze when it is not accompanied with the other side of the coin is, all you end up doing is hurting your schools and their …ability to provide for you what you need.” Isaacson says the problem is the legislature doesn’t have the political will to provide adequate funding for higher education.
