Republican lawmakers are hiring an outside attorney as they prepare to sue Governor Mark Dayton for vetoing funding for the legislature’s day-to-day operations. Dayton is upset that Republicans used a maneuver to try to force him to sign a tax cut bill, and now wants to renegotiate several provisions in that bill, plus other items. House Speaker Kurt Daudt says, “I will not sit down with the governor and renegotiate something he already agreed to. House Democratic Minority Leader Melissa Hortman responds, “To now imply to the public that somehow the governor has individually agreed is just wrong. You [Daudt] yourself have indicated publicly on several occasions he never gave you any assurances he was going to sign any of those bills.” Republicans say Dayton violated the Constitution by cutting off funding for the legislature.
