The Minnesota Golden Gophers took a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning, but could not hold on and fell 3-2 to the USC Trojans Sunday.

Senior Eli Sundquist (2-1) took the loss on the mound for Minnesota (20-21, ). Sophomore Tyler Hemmesch started the ballgame and went 3.2 shutout innings while allowing three hits, walking two and striking out two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Junior Kris Hokenson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota and get them on the board.

The Trojans failed to push any runs across before the Golden Gophers built on their lead in the fourth inning. Minnesota picked up a run on sophomore Charlie Sutherland’s one-out solo home run off of freshman Grant Govel, which brought the Golden Gophers lead to 2-0. The Golden Gophers were unable to hold the lead, as USC scored three times over the remaining five innings to grab the 3-2 win.

GAME NOTES
» Minnesota’s power output was led by Sutherland, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» Minnesota’s highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed one run across.
» The Golden Gophers drew six walks from USC pitching.
» Sutherland led the Golden Gophers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and an RBI.
