University of Minnesota men’s basketball coach Niko Medved has announced that Cade Tyson (Monroe, N.C.) will join the Golden Gopher program. Tyson joins the Gophers after stints at North Carolina and Belmont.
“Cade is a versatile player that will immediately impact our team,” Medved said. “He’s a dynamic scorer, a true playmaker and a great rebounder. Cade is a terrific addition to our program and we can’t wait for him to be a Gopher.”
Tyson, a 6-foot, 7-inch guard/forward, has played in 92 collegiate games, scored 993 points, 142 three-pointers and 48.3 from the field. Last year at North Carolina, Tyson saw action in 31 games and averaged eight minutes a game. Before his stint at UNC, Tyson was a standout at Belmont as the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in 2023 and Second Team All-MVC as a sophomore in 2024. In that 2023-24 season, he ranked second nationally in three-point percentage at 46.5 percent. In his two-year career as a Bruin, Tyson scored 912 points and averaged 15 a game in 61 games. Starting in 59 of them, Tyson averaged 30 minutes and shot 49.2 percent from the field, including 44.6 from the arc. Throughout his career, Tyson has scored double figures 52 times, including a career-high 31 in 2023.
Tyson played his prep career at Carmel Christian School. He was named the 2022 North Carolina Mr. Basketball and a finalist for the Charlotte Observer’s Athlete of the Year. He scored over 2,000 points in high school and averaged 24 points, eight rebounds, three assists and 1.9 steals as a senior en route to a state championship.
