(Minneapolis, MN) — The Golden Gopher women’s golf team has had an exciting fall season, especially the past few weeks. Freshman golfer Mariana Mesones has been named the Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Week in each of the past two weeks after finishing second in back-to-back events. In only her second career college event, she set Golden Gopher program records for 18-hole score and 36-hole score, while playing in the Lady Paladin in South Carolina. Then, a week later, she broke her own 18- and 36-hole program records, while also breaking the 54-hole scoring record at a tournament in Virginia. She says she is playing with confidence and that is a key. Mesones is from Trujillo, Peru and is a member of the Peruvian National Team. She moved to Tampa, Florida when she was 14-years old to continue her golf career at a prep school. She enrolled at the University of Minnesota in September and has been playing well ever since. The Gophers are back in action next Monday and Tuesday, playing at a tournament at the University of Kansas.
