University of Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey was named to the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award Watch List today by the Maxwell Football Club.

The award recognizes the most outstanding freshman player in college football.

Lindsey, who is a redshirt freshman, was named the starting quarterback by head coach P.J. Fleck and is expected to make his first career start on Thursday, Aug. 28 against Buffalo at Huntington Bank Stadium.

Lindsey played in three games last year and completed 4-of-5 passes for 50 yards and one touchdown.

He attended Fayetteville High School in Fayetteville, Ark., and led the team to a 13-0 record and a state championship in his senior year. Lindsey threw for 3,941 yards as a senior and passed for 54 touchdowns. He was named the 7A Offensive Player of the Year, Gatorade Player of the Year in Arkansas and First-Team All-State.

This is the second consecutive year that the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award has their eye on a Gopher. Last year, both Koi Perich and Kerry Brown were named semifinalists for the award and Perich was a finalist.
