The University of Minnesota softball team saw its 2025 season come to a close Sunday afternoon in a 3-0 setback against Michigan in front of a capacity crowd at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
Junior Syndey Schwartz (10-16) started and took the loss in the circle for the Golden Gophers. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits, allowing two walks and struck out five. After allowing two runs in the first inning, Schwartz settled in and retired 11 of the next 12 batters into the fifth inning.
Offensively, the Maroon and Gold was paced by freshman Jae Cosgriff, who went 1-for-2 on the day, hitting a two-out single in the third frame.
Minnesota paid tribute to its four members of the 2025 senior class prior to first pitch Sunday, honoring Kayla Chavez, Taylor Krapf, Margaret Tobias, and Nani Valencia.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wolverines hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and led the entire afternoon, adding a third run on a bases-loaded single in the fifth frame. Minnesota failed to advance a runner into scoring position during the ballgame.
GAME NOTES
» Minnesota pitchers faced 29 Michigan hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out five.
» Cosgriff had the Gophers’ lone hit at the plate with a third-inning single.
» Margaret Tobias drew a lead-off walk to begin the seventh inning for the Maroon and Gold.
» Michigan was led offensively by freshman Lauren Putz, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
» Lauren Derkowski led the Wolverines pitching staff, throwing seven shutout innings and faced one batter over the minimum following a lead-off walk in the final frame.
