Minnesota redshirt senior middle blocker Phoebe Awoleye has been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
The Marietta, Ga., native posted 24 blocks in sweeps over Indiana and Maryland this weekend. She tied the program match record with 14 blocks on Saturday in just three sets against the Terrapins. She set the record for most blocks in a three-set match in Gophers history.
Awoleye had 10 blocks in a sweep of Indiana on Friday as well. She combined for 10 kills this weekend in the two matches.
This is Awoleye’s first career weekly award from the Big Ten.
Minnesota (11-5, 4-2 B1G) takes on Rutgers (5-12, 0-6 B1G) and No. 3 Penn State (16-1, 6-0 B1G) on Friday, Oct. 18 and Sunday, Oct. 20 on the road this weekend.
