The University of Minnesota women’s golf team completed the final 18-holes of competition Tuesday at the season-opening Boilermaker Classic. The Golden Gophers surged three places up the leaderboard to finish in second place. Minnesota improved by 13 strokes between rounds and tallied a 289 (+1) in round three to finish the event with a team score of 302-302-289-893 (+29).

Junior Isabella McCauley finished in solo third place and headlined round three for the Gophers shooting a four-under-par 68. McCauley notched five birdies and improved by eight strokes from round one to the final round. She completed the tournament with a three-day score of 76-70-68-214 (-2).

“I’m so proud of all the girls and how they fought back to have the lowest team score of the tournament on the last day,” said head coach Matt Higgins. “They were really grinding in some tough conditions. Great to see Bella continue how she left off last year with the third place finish as well. Really excited to take good momentum heading into the ANNIKA Invitational next week.”

Host Purdue grabbed first place and finished with a team score of 879 (+15).

Notable:
Sophomore Mariana Mesones shot an even-par 72 in round three to end the event tied for ninth place. She tallied two birdies and 14 pars to close the event with a score of 75-75-72-222 (+6).

Freshman Reese McCauley completed her third round notching four birdies and nine pars to card a one-over-par 73. McCauley tied for 16th place with a three-day score of 75-77-73-225 (+9).

Ruby Chi, playing as an individual, closed out the competition with a three-day score of 74-81-78-233 (+17). She posted 12 pars in round three to end tied for 47th.

Sara Tomaszewski shot a 76 (+4) in round three and tied for 72nd place. The sophomore ended the tournament with a three-day score of 85-80-76-241 (+25).

Freshman Jordana Windhorst-Knudsen added one birdie and eight pars to her scorecard in round three to close the day with an 86 (+14). She finished with a score of 76-83-86-245 (+29).

Looking Ahead:
The team will return home to compete in the ANNIKA Intercollegiate from Sept. 9-11 at the Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo, Minn.
