Despite a standout performance in goal from Sarah Martin, the University of Minnesota soccer team (5-2-1, 1-1-0 Big Ten) dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Penn State (2-2-2, 1-1-0 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon at Jeffrey Field.

Martin racked up a season-high seven saves on eight shots on goal.

Penn State scored the afternoon’s only goal in the 34th minute when Aubrey Kulpa connected on a right-footed strike into the bottom right corner following an assist from Olivia Robinson.

Minnesota looked to respond, generating seven shots on the day, including shots on goal from Ava Westlund and Tenley Senden. Midfielder Ellen Neuharth also created opportunities, putting up two shots for the Gophers.

The Nittany Lions continued to push the attack in the second half, outshooting Minnesota 18-7 overall and earning 11 corner kicks. However, Martin came through with four key saves after the break, denying Penn State attempts to keep it a one-goal game until the final whistle.

The Gophers’ backline held firm behind full 90-minute efforts from Martin, Taylor Heimerl, Selah Koleth, Kate Childers, Matigann Vixayvong and Emily Filbrun.

Minnesota returns home next Sunday to resume Big Ten play against Northwestern. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
