Gopher wrestling fans who are eager for the season to start will have an opportunity to get an early look at the 2017-18 University of Minnesota wrestling team when the team hosts an open-doors practice on Oct. 28 at Maturi Pavilion. The practice is set to begin at 9 a.m. with weigh-ins and then wrestling will begin at 10 a.m.
The Saturday morning practice will include the weigh in at 9 a.m., with typical warm-ups and drills afterwards. The open practice will include more live action than a typical workout to help fans check out their favorite wrestlers before the season begins. Each wrestler will be able to be seen in three matches with different people around their weight to simulate a tournament.
Head Coach Brandon Eggum will also address fans during the practice to give Gopher fans an idea of his outlook on the upcoming season. The entire practice is estimated to take about two hours to complete.
MNN Sports Director Mike Grimm sat down with Eggum to discuss his hopes for the upcoming season:
Fans do not need to RSVP to attend this practice, and it is free to the public. Seating will be at a first-served basis. Fans are advised to either find free parking on surface streets in the surrounding neighborhoods, or pay to park in ramps around Maturi Pavilion. Fans should enter Maturi Pavilion as if they were to attend a normal wrestling event.
