Gov Dayton walks with Valerie Castile after announcement of law-community relations council
Governor Dayton today signed an Executive Order establishing a Council on Law Enforcement and Community Relations.
The council came about as a result of the police killings of Jamar Clark and Philando Castile and will be made up of various law enforcement officials, lawmakers, community groups, members of the Clark and Castile families and others. The goal is to take action to “create and restore trust between communities and their law enforcement agencies.” And Public Safety Commissioner Mona Dohman says “the work of this council can identify when and where there needs to be change and ultimately provide recommendations for the governor and the legislature to consider to identify best practices and reforms to make sure our justice system works for everyone including law enforcement officers and the people they serve.”
The council’s first recommendations are due February 15th, 2017—and the final report due June 30th.
