Governor Mark Dayton says he will veto any bill that overrides family leave ordinances in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, if it comes to him as stand-alone legislation — but Dayton is less firm if the issue becomes an end-of-session bargaining chip for Republicans. “I’m sure they’ve thought of this,” he says. “If they have pre-emption [measure] and 10 other terrible things, and they say we’ll drop nine of ’em for this, I can’t promise that that’s not an agreement I’ll have to reach. I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to be boxed into that corner. I just want to keep the policy stuff out of the budget bills. That’s why they put it *in* the budget bills.” The bill would also prohibit cities or counties from enacting a minimum wage higher than the statewide hourly rate.
