A morning meeting between Governor Mark Dayton and legislative leaders leaves them not only far apart on major elements of the state budget, but also disagreeing about how to resolve their differences. Dayton says the Republican-controlled House and the Senate first need to agree between themselves — not like in 2015 when he tried three-way negotiations. He says, “It was nightmarish, because we… [were] just trying to reconcile three sets of differences versus two.” House Speaker Kurt Daudt responds the governor said earlier he wanted to sit down with both the House and Senate together, but “now he’s saying he wants us to work out all of our differences without him there, and then he’ll get involved after that. Well, it doesn’t make a lot of sense.” Daudt says they’ll continue to push Dayton to be involved in budget negotiations all along.
