Governor Mark Dayton has a meeting with legislative leaders late this afternoon and wants to decide today whether to call a special session to deal with rising health insurance premiums. But not only do Republicans and the governor *not* agree what to do short term; they also are far apart on a long term fix. GOP leaders want to replace MNsure, the state-run health insurance exchange, with what they term a free market system. But the governor says he’s “really proud”of MNsure. He says despite all the political attacks against the exchange, “really the predicament we’re in is a result of the Affordable Care Act. It’s not a function of MNsure.” Republicans strongly disagree. Preston Representative Greg Davids calls MNsure “a duplicative bureaucracy that’s costing hundreds of millions of dollars.” An additional unknown is whether President-elect Donald Trump will make good on his pledge to dismantle Obamacare.
