“It’s a tremendous decision to protect the Boundary Waters for future generations,” says Governor Mark Dayton about the U-S Forest Service *not* renewing mineral leases for the proposed Twin Metals copper-nickel mine near Ely. Dayton says he’s for every job possible for northeast Minnesota, but the Twin Metals project could endanger the B-W-C-A. He says, “Unlike PolyMet which has got a distance to travel if there were a leach [of chemicals], this one is right on top of the Boundary Waters.” Eighth District Minnesota Congressman Rick Nolan calls the decision “a real slap in the face and a punch in the gut” for the Iron Range. Nolan says Washington bureaucrats are denying an opportunity for a project that would bring thousands of greatly-needed jobs to northeast Minnesota.
