Governor Mark Dayton is requesting that the president declare a major disaster in Minnesota after heavy rainstorms and flooding hit the southern part of the state in late September.
In his request, the governor notes that Minnesota is already paying more than $10-million in relief to counties, cities, townships and tribal governments in response to nine major summer storms. Officials have assessed more than $18 million worth of damage to public infrastructure and individual households as a result of storms.
If President Obama declares a major disaster, FEMA would cover 75-percent of the costs and the state would cover the remaining 25-percent.
