Governor Mark Dayton as promised has vetoed two controversial abortion-related bills passed by the Republican-controlled Minnesota Legislature. One bill would have banned use of state money to pay for abortions in publicly-subsidized programs. Backers says those who believe abortion in morally wrong shouldn’t be forced to pay for the procedure through their tax dollars. The governor says the legislation infringes on a woman’s basic right to health and safety regardless of the type of health insurance she has. The other bill would have required state licensing and inspections of all facilities that perform ten or more abortions per month. Supporters say it ensures women’s safety. The governor responds the licensing criteria are “overly broad and unnecessary” and information collection “appears to target health professionals who provide abortion services.”
