Governor Tim Walz today blasted state Senate Republican leaders for their resistance to the two-billion-dollar bonding plan for state public works projects that Walz is rolling out in phases this week and next. Referring to GOP leaders, an obviously agitated Walz said, “You haven’t even seen the proposal. You haven’t even seen the projects. You haven’t even went [sic] and viewed them and listened to the mayors, and this is where our politics has gotten to.”
Senate G-O-P leaders weren’t immediately available to respond. Minnesota Senate Republican Majority Leader Paul Gazelka said in a statement Thursday that he’s more comfortable with a bonding bill under a billion dollars than the two billion the governor is proposing. Gazelka contends budget surpluses come and go, but the state must be responsible in how much debt it takes on.
