The State of Our State
As Governor Dayton prepares to deliver his final State of the State Address at 7:00 this evening, we wanted to share with you some background on the progress Minnesota has made over the last seven years.
When Governor Dayton delivered his first State of the State Address in January 2011, our state faced a number of serious challenges. Minnesota had a $6.2 billion state budget deficit and owed $1.9 billion to our schools. Over 202,000 Minnesotans were out of work, and our statewide unemployment rate was 6.9 percent.
Since then, the State of our State has greatly improved. Smart investments, tough choices, and sound fiscal management over the last seven years have helped to build a much Better Minnesota. The chart included below provides additional context for some of those improvements.
Tune in to watch or listen to Governor Dayton’s State of the State Address tonight to hear his thoughts on the condition of our state, the challenges still facing Minnesotans, and his priorities for the 2018 Legislative Session.
