Governor Tim Walz at Minnesota State University Moorhead today, touting his plan for “Walz checks” — a thousand dollars for married couples and 500 dollars for singles. The governor points to the large budget surplus: “Minnesota’s in a strong position, first and foremost to make sure that we’re able to lower taxes on the middle class, we’re able to return checks to folks right now.”
G-O-P lawmakers say the huge surplus proves state government is over-collecting and Minnesotans deserve permanent tax cuts. Clay County Republican Party Chairman Rodney Johnson says the governor and Democrats “only offer another gimmicky, one-time spending spree — even as inflation hits another record high.”
