A new report shows almost 100 people drowned in the Great Lakes in 2016, a 78-percent increase from the year before. One-tenth of the deaths were in Lake Superior and almost half were in Lake Michigan. Experts blame warmer weather that drew more people to beaches, plus rising water levels causing rip currents — which were blamed for half of all Great Lakes drownings last year. Rip current warnings are frequently issued for Duluth/Superior area beaches.
