A coalition of groups announces today (noon) it’s suing the State of Minnesota, alleging current laws protect ineffective teachers who should no longer be in the classroom. The suit asks the court to rule unconstitutional Minnesota’s teacher tenure and dismissal laws, claiming they violate the constitutional guarantee of a “thorough and efficient” education. Education Minnesota teachers union president Denise Specht (SPECK) responds Minnesota’s due-process laws protect teachers from discrimination and arbitrary punishment, but “explicitly do not protect ineffective teachers.” The lawsuit is only the third of its kind in the country and follows similar legal battles in New York and California.
