(Minneapolis, MN) — Researchers at HCMC have been awarded $375,000 in state grant funding to develop ways to help patients with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. The money will be used in three specific areas: to focus on neurovision rehabilitation for patients with mild traumatic brain injuries using MRI; to more precisely diagnose brain injuries; and to test an electrical stimulator on the surface of the spinal cord to help restore muscle tone in otherwise paralyzed limbs. Dr. Uzma Samadani (ooz-muh SAH-muh-dahn-ee) says she’s excited about the possibilities because for a neurosrugeon there’s nothing better than taking a person who’s not walking and restoring their functional ability to walk.
