A state commission gets input this afternoon on proposals to reduce prison sentences for non-violent drug offenses. Lars Negstad with the faith-based group ISAIAH supports it. Negstad says, “We’re locking up way too many people who are simply addicts or users of drugs, and not necessarily dealers or involved in the business of drugs.” The Minnesota County Attorneys Association acknowledges the growing consensus that some drug laws are unnecessarily harsh and should be changed, but warns the proposal will “reduce sentences for serious first time drug sellers and profiteers who… prey on our most vulnerable community members.”
