Democrats are battling Democrats, and Republicans are challenging Republicans in legislative contests in today’s primary election, and here are a few of the most notable: In Duluth, DFL-endorsed plaintiffs’ attorney Jen McEwen is challenging fellow Democrat, state Senator Erik Simonson — who has the support of Governor Tim Walz. Environmental issues are big in the campaign. Democratic Senator Jeff Hayden, whose Minneapolis district bore the brunt of looting and riots after George Floyd’s death, faces a primary challenge from Somali-American activist Omar Fateh, who has the DFL Party endorsement. And the top Republican state lawmakers — Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka from Nisswa and House Minority Leader Kurt Daudt from Crown — both have primary rivals, but neither challenger is considered much of a threat.
