Good news for those headed up the North Shore this holiday weekend: Highway 61 at Taconite Harbor near Schroeder has re-opened. A truck with an oversized load hit the top of an unused railroad bridge over the highway Thursday afternoon, forcing motorists to take a 27-mile detour because the bridge was no longer structurally stable. MN-DOT’s Stephanie Smith-Christensen in Duluth says the agency in coordination with Cleveland Cliffs and Lakehead Constructors “all worked really hard together to get out there and get the bridge taken down.” Smith-Christensen says with the holiday weekend coming up, the priority was re-opening Highway 61 to traffic. She says the bridge had been struck before and this latest hit compromised its structural stability.
