H-M-Os in Minnesota’s individual market are planning to decrease health insurance premiums next year between seven and 12 percent. Republican Representative Greg Davids from Preston credits the “reinsurance” bill the legislature passed in 2017. Davids says, “Now, we’ve got a long ways to go. I’m not saying everything is fine and wonderful, because it’s not — but I can only imagine what would have happened had we not done what we did.”
Governor Mark Dayton says it’s good news but taxpayers should not have to keep subsidizing insurance companies to hold down health care costs. Dayton wants everyone regardless of income to be able to purchase health insurance through state-run MinnesotaCare. Republicans say that just expands government bureaucracy and the real solution is free-market competition.
