House Democratic leaders talk about strategy to get immigrant drivers license bill to governor’s desk

April 8, 2019 By Bill Werner

The Democrat-controlled Minnesota House passed it Friday, but a bill allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain a Minnesota drivers license has little chance of passing the Republican-controlled Senate. House Democratic Majority Leader Ryan Winkler says it’s for that reason they will include the measure in budget bills. “While we’re continuing to work with senators on this issue, we have not yet seen the bill move forward [in the MN Senate] and so we are trying to bring it all the way to the end at the end of session, if that’s what it takes,” Winkler says.

But are House Democrats prepared to hold up passing state budget bills unless Republicans agree to drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants? Winkler says, “We are not going to issue any ultimatums on any issue going into the end of this session, period.”
